Honestly, professionalism isn't always a character trait I conscientiously strive to maintain, but this gets me:
As a part of the degree program, all MSU Music Industry students are required to take some kind of minor from the College of Business. To be frank, many of us choose to be Marketing minors for the simple fact that the minor is short, and relatively easy... Almost too easy.
Many classes in our MI program, including Social Media in the Music Industry, Music Promotions in the Music Industry, and Concert Production and Artist Management, involve lots of hands-on marketing and real-world experience. After these classes, senior students are required to complete a project that involves putting together something of their own in the music industry (e.g. a concert, EP, artist management, etc.). I'm beginning to find (along with a few friends), that the Music Industry program is one of the few programs on campus that requires this style of experience.
While in the process of finishing my minor, I've stumbled across a handful of College of Business majors, many of whom have yet to impress me. Few of these students seem to have a grasp on concepts like target marketing, effective social media, or communication. Most don't seem to realize the cloudy fate looming ahead of them.
When lumped into a group assignment during class (groups chosen randomly), I was surprised to find that only the Music Industry students in each group had answers to the first few questions. Only after taking a few cues did other students begin to pipe up (and then they couldn't stop). Why the hesitation, the glazey eyes, the confusion?
No, it's not the most coherent assignment, and it doesn't seem too applicable now. But it's not even necessarily the content of your answers, but the way you behaved that bothers me. Don't you care about your future - like landing a job or networking with intelligent people someday?
I shouldn't be so assuming - I'm sure not all Business students are this way - it's just a certain bunch. But it's a shame Business is the "default major" at this school.
Call me biased. Call me cocky. Call me pretentious.
But I'm not the only one who feels this way.
