Torn

Shame on me. Why did I not research what a copywriter actually does a loooooong time ago?

I could have had a job by now.

Naturally, I assumed (you know, the whole you, me, and ass thing) that a copywriter has something to do with copyright. So I would see all these copywriter job postings for places like ad agencies, department stores, and other non-government offices and think, Why do all these businesses need copyright so often? Duh.

So, while I've got a new job search idea, I'll keep plugging away for the next couple weeks. If I haven't set up anything solid in NYC by August 16th, I'll begin making arrangements to move back home. This could mean moving back in with my parents (I'm not ashamed...yet) and continuing a job search in a different large city, or moving to Mankato and working at Hy-Vee for another year or so (also, not ashamed) while pursuing other side endeavors.

To be honest, I'm not totally heartbroken at the prospect of leaving New York right now. It's been fun and a wonderful experience, but the big city life just isn't quite for me yet. This is where I'm torn: Stay because so many people say the jobs are here, or go back and enjoy the peacefulness a little while longer and make my own opportunities?

I kind of like my own opportunities.

Google Reader No More

I'm really sad about this. Google will no longer be supporting its RSS (Really Simple Syndication) reader after July 1st of this year. I'm not really sure why, but it's a bummer that I'll have to find some other way to get all of my regular-visited news sites / blogs into one place.

Thinking about it more, RSS seems to have been not much more than a fad. For a while, every blog and website you went to had an RSS button, making it easy to add each site to one's reader. Now, you have to search to find a link to the feeder URL (or whatever it's called), and some places don't even have one at all.

Time to evolve with the rest of the internet, I suppose!

Hey 2013

Long time, no read, my one faithful reader (hey Hannah).

I've made many goals for myself for 2013, some of which include re-learning Spanish (Eliseo? :)), putting on a successful improv show at Pub 500, and taking a free astronomy course from MIT online.

Another goal of mine is to re-start / continue blogging regularly. This one is an attempt to wean myself back into it. So here's an unfortunate article to read:

Isn't it embarrassing?

The Future of the Office

When I think of the future, I like to think of myself in a large, comfortable office with plenty of desktop space and natural sunlight. I ran across this article that makes interesting predictions regarding office appliances and what will come of them:

http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2012/09/26/10-Ways-Your-Office-Will-Be-Different-in-Five-Years.aspx#page1

After the intro, the article is essentially just a slide show, and I couldn't tell what some of the pictures were trying to convey. But there are some things (like Rolodexes and suits and ties) that I agree may drop off (some have already). That's okay with me; my vision of the future also involves a more laid-back workplace atmosphere and casual employees anyway.

Cleaning Up Your Mess

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/industry_news/industry_opinion_the_future-proof_music_library.html

This article discusses a couple up and coming apps (Tomahawk and Musicplayr) that may change our music libraries as we know them. Both apps create a way for someone to keep all of their music in one place, rather than scrambling through an iTunes library, CDs/records, Spotify playlists, etc. to find a particular song. While it could be a blessing, it may also lead to legal and security issues.

I'll be really excited if either app takes off. I like not scrambling.
